These platforms (along with Intrusion Prevention Systems - IPS) are intended to alert on intrusive events or simply block access by defined rules. Yet, these devices were never intended to directly protect corporate databases and few database-oriented tools provide the functionality required to truly safeguard databases. What is necessary to perform this function includes not only intrusion detection capabilities based on comprehensive understanding of access activities, but also a set of applications that allow for continuous monitoring, analysis, reporting, and alerting of database access activities.
