Security breaches not on rise Monday, 16 May 2005, 18:10 GMT In the months since ChoicePoint admitted leaking personal information on 145,000 people to identity thieves, numerous companies have announced even bigger data bungles of their own. Online brokerage Ameritrade said it lost a computer back-up tape holding 200,000 client accounts. Hackers stole 1.4 million customer credit card numbers from shoe retailer DSW. And Bank of America said in February that it lost tapes containing the account information of more than a million federal government employees -- including members of the Senate now considering legislation to curb the problem.
