PC-to-PC Voice over Internet will not convert the masses to internet phone calls, warns IP guru
Publication date: Wednesday, 18 May 2005

‘Plug and Play’ must be the model going forward

One of the world’s leading authorities on the Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and UK CEO of one of the world’s leading telecoms equipment manufacturers – DeTeWe – has warned today that the Voice-over-IP services which do not enable consumers to use traditional handsets are doomed to remain the preserve of the technology community.

“For VoIP to be really successful it must be about more than just the technology or "disrupting" the old phone system. To really make commercial inroads, it’s got to be just as simple to use as the existing options – or hopefully, simpler. In addition, it’s got to be priced right so as to ensure that consumers feel compelled to make the switch.”

“Too many of the existing VoIP services are designed to enable PC-to-PC calls. If I want to make an internet phone call, I don’t want to have to buy a ‘VoIP (SIP) phone’ or turn on my PC – it just shouldn’t be necessary. The SIP phones currently on the market are expensive and the software-based VoIP services, like Skype, limit you to only calling people who also have the same installed application.”

“Successful widespread adoption of VoIP is going to happen when someone enters the market with a ‘plug and play’ solution, using the existing lines and handsets that Joe Public already has in their house. Until that time, this revolutionary technology will continue to be more about the hype than a practical way of using the Net to make calls.”
