For many, the internet is "unsafe at any speed", to borrow Ralph Nader's 1950s wake-up call to the US motor industry. Electronic commerce is already travelling too fast to hit the brakes, however, and the 700 attendees who rolled up for AusCERT 2004, the third annual Asia-Pacific IT Security Conference held on the Gold Coast last week, were looking for ways to steer a course around the security pot-holes. Drop the calls to abolish online banking, as there can be no turning back on e-commerce, Commonwealth Bank security chief John Geurts has warned industry critics.
