Sasser was a worm in a teacup

Despite the hype, the Sasser worm only affected one per cent of PCs, according to a new study by a security firm. TruSecure says - according to its survey - only 8.1 million computers contracted the worm and most of them were in the US and Canada. Of these, only one per cent reported infections and only a third of them suffered a cash loss because of the worm. Among those infected nearly three-quarters had an increase in help desk activity as the major impact of the worm.

So far the estimated world wide cost of the worm has been put at $979 million. On the other hand the Blaster worm did damage estimated at $US1.3 billion worth of damage in America alone.
