Postini Installs Wireless LAN from Trapeze Networks for Employee Mobility
Monday, 13 June 2005 09:57 ESTPLEASANTON, Calif. — June 13, 2005 — In an effort to give employees the ability to roam securely while their wireless laptops and PDAs remain connected to the corporate network, email security and management leader Postini installed a wireless local area network (WLAN) from Trapeze Networks throughout its Redwood City, Calif. offices.
Postini is the industry's leading provider of email security and management solutions to more than 4,700 customers worldwide. Postini's managed service eliminates spam and viruses before they can reach a company's email gateway. It also stops denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and directory harvest attacks, assures proper delivery of email, and improves overall email performance.
Before evaluating wireless gear from Trapeze and Aruba, Postini deployed a handful of "fat" access points (APs), which handle many of the WLAN capabilities normally found in a switch. Postini determined that extending WLAN services using "fat" APs would increase the cost and complexity of management.
Instead, Postini considered next-generation WLAN solutions that used "thin" AP architectures, such as the Trapeze WLAN Mobility System™. Postini also wanted a WLAN that would be easy to manage and scale while integrating easily with the existing wired infrastructure.
After a 30-day trial period, Postini chose the WLAN Mobility System from Trapeze, citing its robust RingMaster™ planning, configuration and management capabilities. Postini was also impressed with the Trapeze GuestPass™ secure guest provisioning application and WebAAA™, which supports the entire realm of AAA services — authentication, authorization and accounting — for WLAN clients who authenticate using a web browser.
"The Trapeze WLAN Mobility System was incredibly easy to set up, configure and manage," said Russ Vrolyk, network engineer at Postini. "We spend less time troubleshooting with the Trapeze Mobility System, compared to the solution we had before."
Postini has installed a mix of Trapeze Mobility Exchange™ switches — the MX-20™ and MXR-2™ — as well as Trapeze Mobility Point™ APs. On the corporate network, traffic is encrypted using WiFi Protected Access (WPA), based on the IEEE 802.11i Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), and WPA2, based on IEEE 802.11i Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). WPA encryption is also used for guest access.
"We've really enjoyed working with Trapeze and are very happy with our choice to go with them for our long term wireless needs," continued Vrolyk. "We look forward to working with Trapeze as our company and network grows."
