The names and social security numbers of about 300 university students were visible on the Internet for about a year-and-a-half, and there have been several similar incidents at schools across the country.

The information became available when a former employee of the Dean of Students office accidently left the folder, which was backed up on the university server, open and did not delete it, said Jeffrey Alford, vice chancellor for university relations and communications.
