Magold-A worm author sentenced
Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:25 ESTAnti-virus firm Sophos has reported that a teenager, Laszlo K, has been found guilty of infecting computers with Magold-A worm. A Hungarian court, located in Veszprem, has sentenced Laszlo K to two years probation for unauthorised use of computers and ordered him to pay 500,000 forints (about ½1300) towards court costs. According to antivirus software vendor Symantec, W32.HLLW.Magold@mm is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself to recipients it finds in the Windows Address Book and in all files with .html, .htm, and .hta file extensions.
The e-mail message has a file attachment of Maya Gold.scr. It spoofs the "from" address to be one in Hungary. The worm spreads through many different peer-to-peer file-sharing programs as well as through mIRC.
Magold-A, first seen in May 2003, poses as pictures of Hungarian porn star Maya Gold. When downloaded onto a computer, it disables an infected machine's AV software and messes with its settings. Among other things, Magold-A cripples a user's mouse, opens the CD-ROM drive tray or changes the Windows colour scheme.
