IT students sharpen hacking skills
Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:51 EST

Singapore - Hacker attacks and computer system crashes will soon be part of the curriculum for electrical and electronic engineering students, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) representatives said on Thursday. Starting on Monday, the classes will be held at a S$1,5-million (about R5,5-million) data centre. Students will be allowed to simulate server crashes and introduce viruses into a protected environment within the Network Operation Centre, an SP lecturer said. "We want to create a networking environment that is as realistic as possible," said senior lecturer Steven Chew.

Nearly 600 students will take part in the classes, the only ones to formally learn the skills in the city-state's classrooms.

"Infocomm technology has become a pervasive component of our lives," said Stephen Lim, first vice-chairman of the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation.
