Oracle launches Linux business unit
Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:00 ESTOracle Corp has launched a Linux business unit which will take advantage of support for the freely-distributed operating system in the Asia Pacific region. The regional unit, to be headed by Oracle vice-president Leigh Warren, would work to develop and support customer implementations on Linux platforms. The Oracle Asia Pacific Linux Business Unit would consist of a board led by regional Oracle Asia Pacific execituve vice-president Derek Williams. Oracle country units would each have a champion – a person or small group –to set the priorities for promoting Linux within their own countries, and they would regularly get together to work out regional level priorities.
Outlining the Linux Business Unit’s mission, Oracle Malaysia managing director V.R. Srivatsan said that until recently, Linux had been seen as lacking in the enterprise-level support and the ability to scale to enterprise-class systems. This made it hard for large enterprises and public-sector agencies to justify adopting Linux as the platform of choice.
