Symantec considers using Linux software Thursday, 27 May 2004, 13:01 GMT Symantec Corp. chief executive John Thompson said Wednesday his company is considering whether to use Linux operating system software to run its desktop computers instead of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows. Symantec, the largest maker of consumer anti-virus software, is considering switching some or all of its employees from Windows software to Linux, a free operating system developed by programmers around the world, Thompson said at a conference in New York hosted by UBS AG. "I could certainly envision myself using a Linux desktop," he said. A formal study will begin after Symantec finishes a version of anti-virus software for Linux this year, he said. "I'm not sure if it would be appropriate for everyone in the company." Microsoft chief financial officer John Connors has said his company must make its Windows software, which runs 93 percent of personal computers, distinct in its features to avoid incursions by Linux.
