Linux will become a mainstream enterprise platform Thursday, 20 May 2004, 19:44 GMT Over the next year or two, the IT industry can expect to see Linux become a mainstream platform for enterprise-level applications, as software developers like Veritas build solutions that help it become as robust and manageable as traditional enterprise-class platforms. According to Ong Kah Wooi, Veritas Software Corp technical consultant manager, his company as well as other software companies are “expanding the software landscape” for Linux by enhancing availability, performance and manageability through automated functions. Even now, he said, companies with online operations as large as eBay, the online auction house, are already running mission-critical applications on Linux, and enterprise-class software vendors like Oracle Corp and SAP already offer their solutions on Linux. While adoption of Linux software by enterprises in Malaysia is not as fast as in the United States, we will catch up, said Ong. Given the pervasiveness of Linux in education institutions in this country, Ong believes that current and future batches of IT professionals would come into the workforce trained to work with Linux.
