Wireless: new route for piracy? Monday, 05 April 2004, 11:15 GMT Music is pirated every day over the Internet. Can the mobile phone networks do a better job of protecting artists' rights? Record labels will soon find out. On Wednesday, T-Mobile of Germany is starting Mobile Jukebox, a service that will allow customers in Britain, Germany and Austria to download 90-second to 120-second versions of their favorite tracks onto mobile phones. Downloading a song will cost E2.49, or $3, and will take about two minutes. Consumers will have access to more than 200 tracks, including current hits from groups like SugaBabe and songs from a wide variety of music genres, including pop, rock, dance, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. "We believe music over handsets will be popular for all sorts of age groups," said Nikesh Arora, chief marketing officer at London-based T-Mobile International. "The plan is to evolve the service into full audio songs and into full-motion video, but to get there we have to solve two issues." Those are copyright management and download speeds.
