EUROPEAN INTERNET EXCHANGES DISCUSS DEVELOPMENT PLANS

The largest-ever gathering of the specialist organisations that facilitate global transmission of Internet data will convene in London next week (11 & 12 April) to identify ways of improving services for users of the Internet.
The forum - hosted by the London Internet Exchange (LINX) and University College London - will see representatives from 34 Internet exchange points (IXPs) from Europe, the USA and Japan discuss ways of coordinating procedures and technical standards for the benefit of Internet users.
LINX chief executive John Souter said: "The Internet has become an indispensable tool for the efficient operation of all sectors of modern society. This forum will provide an opportunity for IXPs, which provide facilities for switching Internet data between service providers, to discuss ways of harmonising their technical processes for the benefit of all users."
IXPs operate high-capacity, secure switching centres where Internet service providers (ISPs) can interconnect their networks - known as peering - to provide rapid, cost-effective routing of Internet traffic. LINX, which provides peering services for 170-plus ISPs and content delivery service providers, is the world's largest volume IXP with traffic flows exceeding 75 gigabits per second at peak periods.
Euro-IX was formed in May 2001 as a means of coordinating technical standards and the development of common procedures among European IXPs. It now has 34 member IXPs and has recently extended its international influence with the acceptance of new associate members from the USA and Japan.
Next week's forum will include workshops focusing on technical and commercial issues, the development of new technologies and a customer feedback session presented by the BBC, one of the world's largest providers of Internet content. The programme will include speakers from Cambridge University and University College London.
Previous Euro-IX gatherings have been held in Barcelona, Turin, Lisbon, Berlin and Athens. The London forum is being held at University College London and is sponsored by Force10 Networks, a supplier of high-capacity Internet switches and routers.
