Openwave Launches Edge Gx 2.0 Allowing Operators To Exchange Information About Spammers And Hackers Publication date: Wednesday, 20 October 2004 With Edge Gx 2.0 Operators Can Vote Message Abusers off the Network REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 19, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced the release of Openwave® Edge Gx 2.0 to help protect end-users against spam, viruses and other malicious attacks. Edge Gx 2.0 is the first mobile messaging anti-abuse edge services gateway, specifically designed for mobile service providers, that protects users from spam and virsues for mobile messaging services including MMS, e-mail and SMS. Edge Gx 2.0 includes Shared Server Intelligence (SSI), which instantly secures the entire messaging network at the instance of attack, eliminating vulnerabilities found in other anti-spam and anti-virus solutions, and prevents spammers from exploiting these vulnerabilities. Edge Gx 2.0 enables networks to communicate and share information in real time to protect systems from messaging abuse attacks; enforces an operator's acceptable usage policy by stopping messaging abuse before it enters a network; and allows operators to offer end users a protected messaging experience on all services. "Unlike other solutions on the market, Edge Gx 2.0 is a true carrier-scale solution," said Rich Wong, general manager of messaging applications at Openwave Systems. "The larger the messaging system, the more vulnerable carriers are--which means there is an even greater need for a shared brain or shared server intelligence, so systems can communicate in real time and lock down every messaging entry point at the moment of attack." Edge Gx 2.0 enables a new model for certified mail. Service providers can use Edge Gx 2.0 to tag and organize messages that subscribers can then categorize into junk, regular email or priority email. "Openwave's depth of experience in client and server messaging coupled with its leadership role in messaging anti-abuse, gives Openwave a central role in developing innovative solutions and services that protect the end-user experience," said Scott Ellison, Program Director, Wireless and Mobile Communications, IDC. "The next generation of messaging abuse targets mobile devices and Openwave is primed to help mobile operators protect their subscribers." About Openwave Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV) is the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the communications industry. Openwave's breadth of products, including mobile phone software, multimedia messaging software (MMS), email, location and mobile gateways, along with its worldwide expertise enable its customers to deliver innovative and differentiated data services.
