Health First Chooses Bluesocket(r) For Expansive Wireless Network
Tuesday, 6 September 2005 13:46 EST
BURLINGTON, Mass.-- Sept. 6, 2005--Bluesocket, Inc., (www.bluesocket.com) the leader in open wireless security and management solutions, today announced that Health First, an integrated healthcare network in Brevard County, Florida, has implemented two BlueSecure(TM) 5000 Controllers to provide complimentary, secure wireless access to patients and their families in their three hospitals and hospice house locations.
Health First chose the BlueSecure 5000 Controllers based upon their robust security features and superior bandwidth management. Their goal was to provide Internet access to patients and their families from an existing wireless infrastructure.
"We wanted to provide an experience similar to the hospitality industry where everything is convenient and users feel at home. However, we needed to ensure that network bandwidth would remain available for critical traffic and that the proper security was in place," said Marvin Reece, Manager of Network & Telecom Services. "The BlueSecure Controllers give us a way to effectively isolate and monitor guest traffic while maintaining the integrity of our corporate and clinical applications." Health First employs a number of patient-related applications, including clinical documentation, vital sign tracking, nursing, and operating room scheduling in their wireless environment.
Health First has always maintained a forward-thinking attitude toward patient care and service. They recently were named one of the 100 Most Wired Health Systems in the country by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. "At Health First, we are always moving towards that next plateau when it comes to technology in our environment," according to Kevin Johnson, Health First Wireless Administrator. "Our expertise in information technology has enabled us to consistently maintain a leading edge in providing quality healthcare to our growing Brevard County population."
The BlueSecure 5000 Controllers enable Health First to easily manage guest users on more than 400 Cisco Access Points in its wireless network. Utilizing Bluesocket's Secure Mobility(R) technology for wireless data and voice applications, BlueSecure Controllers provide high-performance, reliable, policy-based WLAN security and management solutions that have been deployed by thousands of large institutions, enterprises, and public access providers.
Health First worked with Prosys Information Systems to deploy the wireless network. "We needed to make sure that we adhered to all of the standards and regulatory bodies, such as (HIPAA)(1)," said Armando Arguin, Prosys Network Engineer and Enterprise Systems Management Engineer. "We thought this was a good solution for them, but in the end, Health First was the one that pushed for the use of Bluesocket."
"We pride ourselves on researching every vendor solution," said Jeff Faile, Network Engineer for Health First. "We have a test environment in-house and we were able to conduct a side by side comparison with other controllers. After evaluating a number of products supporting similar features, it was obvious that Bluesocket stood out from the others and provided the best solution."
Health First has six years of wireless experience under its belt. They began by providing wireless WAN services to a roaming mobile clinic that provided care for people without insurance and for children with special needs. "We would just point them back to one of the wireless towers located on our main facilities and they would be able to access the patients electronic medical record," said Faile. Soon, the wireless network moved inside to the LAN and now provides 100% wireless coverage for devices like laptops, PDAs, IP phones and personal VoIP communication devices.
In the future, Health First will continue to maximize the value of their wireless LAN with research into new and innovative products and technologies like the ones from Bluesocket.
