Save Your Computer Files or Go to Jail?
Friday, 26 August 2005 17:59 ESTBURBANK, Calif.--Aug. 25, 2005--Sooner or later, disasters happen to every computer user. They delete important files, on purpose or accidentally. But thanks to the multibillion-dollar misdeeds of others, corporations now deleting certain records risk severe fines; and yes -- employees could even go to jail. A new white paper issued by technology expert Joel Shore discusses the long arm of the law with computers and how Undelete(R) software can solve your legal woes.
In 2002, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act changed the rules for document retention within public corporations. The act amended the federal obstruction of justice statute, greatly increasing the penalties for the criminal destruction, alteration, and falsification of records in certain circumstances. The net result is corporations now need to enact formal document retention policies. But these policies can create difficulties if they do not look at the big picture amongst computer users. Per the Shore paper:
"What such a plan is likely to miss is the workaday fine details down in the trenches, the often unintentional actions taken by individual rank-and-file workers who spend hours at a computer every day. Put another, less flattering way, corporate executives may erase files because they have something to hide; an average employee deletes or overwrites an individual file by accident, then desperately tries to get it back."
A leading software program called Undelete 5 was built with these challenges in mind. It offers the solution for both document retention and file recovery to quickly retrieve deleted data (accidentally or otherwise). Such a program transparently captures the earlier versions of files in the exact state they were in prior to being modified thereby protecting the corporation and its users' data. According to Shore:
"Undelete's ability to recover files of any size, from any local or network location, and to provide comprehensive version protection and restoration services, sets it apart from other products currently available. These capabilities are certain to put users' minds at ease..."
Should you wait for the government to come down on your company before implementing a document retention plan? Certainly not. A proper document retention plan is your, "Stay Out of Jail Free" card. Use Undelete now.
