AppSense Calls Time on Poor System Management Publication date: Monday, 11 July 2005 DARESBURY , UK , 11 th July 2005 – AppSense, a specialist in system performance and security, today announced the availability of the AppSense Management Suite, a set of closely integrated system management applications for servers and desktops. As an evolution of the AppSense Performance Suite it significantly enhances existing capabilities as well as introducing a completely new component, AppSense Environment Manager. This extra application, has been specifically developed to provide a tool for corporate IT managers to cut the amount of time and resources spent on desktop and server set up, configuration and on-going management as well as locking down and removing features that pose a risk to corporate data and security. The AppSense Management Suite addresses a number of issues facing IT managers of Microsoft Windows server, desktop and server-based computing environments, including: unpredictable and high demands on processor and memory resources; security threats from user introduced viruses and unauthorised applications; and excessive time spent on system set up and maintenance. By focusing on maintaining system integrity and boosting performance the suite is aimed at helping organizations lower the total cost of ownership of their IT infrastructure and use existing resources more efficiently and effectively. “Although the cost of memory, processing power and bandwidth is falling, most organisations are not yet seeing the benefit. The root of the problem lies in the inefficient use of resources, with systems typically running at under 20 percent of capacity. This is compounded by issues with environment configuration and deployment time running into days or weeks, and high operational costs swallowing IT budgets,” explained Charles Sharland, CEO, AppSense. “With the AppSense Management Suite we’re addressing the fundamental issue of spiralling IT operational costs by providing a full suite of products that enable our customers to get more out of their existing systems.” The AppSense Management Suite includes the following distinct elements: AppSense Application Manager – delivers immediate protection against all ‘user-introduced’ applications by blocking the execution of unauthorized executable and script content, including viruses, hacking tools, peer-to-peer, Spyware, games and instant messengers. Also provides greater control over application licensing with the ability to limit access to and number, time and duration of application instances running. AppSense Performance Manager – improves desktop or server performance using patented ‘thread throttling’ technology, which prevents overloading of the processor, and consequent performance degradation. Makes systems perform more efficiently by distributing the resources evenly and fairly amongst all the users and their applications. Includes the memory control capabilities previously available with AppSense Optimizer. AppSense Environment Manager – a new module that allows IT departments to centrally configure and manage policies for the entire organization; streamline the administration of complex tasks; and improve the end user experience by creating a simplified and consistent environment. Includes dynamic self-healing to restore any unapproved system changes and maintain stability. “The AppSense Management Suite provides easy-to-use cost reduction and security improvement tools, and additional manageability, with low cost-of-entry, for customers using Microsoft Windows platforms,” says Alan Rodger, research analyst, Butler Group. “The patented ‘thread-throttling’ technology within the AppSense Performance Manager component of the suite, and the approach to optimizing wasteful resource usage, are innovative solutions with real benefits of cost reduction and service improvement. The cost-related challenges of managing a Windows-based desktop population are also addressed highly practically by the suite.” The AppSense Management Suite has a deployment architecture that is sufficiently granular to allow IT managers to specify the exact machine and time of deployment. Through its dynamic update of new settings the upgrade can be achieved without any disruption to users, thus avoiding downtime. Also included is an auditing framework to assist in the management of multiple desktops and servers. AppSense Management Suite is available today as a free upgrade to all AppSense Performance Suite customers with a valid software subscription. For new customers the price for the complete suite is £2,195 (US$3,295) per Terminal Services server, £40 (US$60) per desktop and £995 (US$1,495) per dual processor for non Terminal Services implementations.
