We haven't been hacked - eBay
Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:38 ESTAuction website eBay had denied reports that it was hacked by Nigerian 419 scamsters who stole client credit card details, according to AuctionBytes, an information website for online auction users.
According to a report in Monday's Sake, Inspector Rian Visser of the SA police's commercial crimes unit warned South Africans that eBay had been hacked and their credit card details may be in danger. He advised eBay clients to cancel their credit cards.
Visser told Sake that local police and the US Secret Service were working together to bring down the 419 syndicate.
Quoted on auctionbytes.com, eBay spokesperson Hani Durzy said: "eBay's database was not hacked, eBay's credit card database has never been hacked, and it was not hacked here. We are in constant communication with the US Secret Service, they have not contacted us, and we have not heard from South African police."
