Computer Worm Damage Soars Sharply in May
Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:40 ESTComputer viruses resumed their full-throttle attack on the virtual world as the number of strains more than quadrupled in May from a month ago. The Korea Information Security Agency (KISA) on Wednesday said as many as 20,478 virus damages were reported to the state-backed agency in May, up 451% from April's 4,541 cases. The figure is the second-worst monthly data ever, just shy of the record of 20,681 cases reached last September. In addition, this year's accumulated virus reports amounted to 58,968, already approaching a 70 percent level of 85,023 for the year 2003.
``Outbreaks of virus-related harm showed signs of abating in April but it surged last month as mutants of various malicious codes nagged the computer users at the same time,'' KISA official Shin Dae-kyu said.
