VPN trends
Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:19 ESTAccording to research firm Infonetics, VPN revenues are expected to exceed US$4.1 billion by 2007. Growth is being driven by factors such as 9/11 which led to increased spending in cybersecurity, privacy mandates such as HIPAA in the United States, the onslaught of worms and Trojans, and the risks associated with the adoption of new technologies like wireless local area networks (WLANs), said Lisa Phifer, vice president of Core Competence. Core Competence advises companies regarding security needs, product assessment and the use of emerging technologies and best practices.
In recent months, the most significant change for firewall VPN appliances has been the integration of new security technologies like intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems and application layer filtering, said Phifer. VPN-only appliances are disappearing, and are currently being used mainly as remote VPN access concentrators.
