New trend seen in latest worms
Monday, 15 March 2004 12:14 ESTSymantec, the anti-virus software company, said it tracked an average of seven new Internet security vulnerabilities per day in 2003. In a report being released today analyzing recent Internet threats, Symantec researchers said that one of 2003's most significant events occurred in August, when three severe worms surfaced within 12 days. Blaster, Welchia and Sobig.F infected millions of computers and may have resulted in up to $2 billion in damage, according to the report.
Symantec, based in Cupertino, Calif., said it's seeing a new trend of worms that target specific vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Windows operating system — a tactic virtually unheard of before 2003.
Past worms like Nimda and Code Red targeted servers, not the operating system, said Oliver Friedrichs, a senior manager at Symantec. But Blaster and the recent ASN.1 vulnerability went after a much bigger pool of machines by focusing on Windows.
