Xbox 'on fire' Author: IT-Observer Staff Friday, 18 February 2005, 18:35 GMT The software giant Microsoft Corp. yesterday issued a warning that more than 14 million Xbox games consoles could be a fire hazard. Microsoft said the move was a precaution after 30 reports of consoles causing minor injury or property damage. In seven cases, consumers in the US, Britain and Canada burnt their hands. Another 23 cases involved fire or smoke damage to carpets and entertainment centers. "It's a technical problem that affected a small number of systems," said Schelley Olhava, video-game analyst at research firm IDC Corp. "I don't see it as impacting the momentum for Xbox." Matt Rosoff, analyst at Kirkland-based research firm Directions on Microsoft, added that it’s not going to have a huge effect on the business itself. Peter Moore, vice president with Microsoft’s home and entertainment division, said Microsoft had spent the last several months gearing up for the recall announcement, by producing more power cords and making other arrangements. Microsoft advised gamers that until the replacement power cords arrived, they should turn off their console when it was not in use. Customers can order a free replacement cord by going to the game console's Web site, www.xbox.com. |
