Nintendo DS Soars

Sales of Nintendo’s new and controversial, handheld gaming system “Nintendo DS” are above analysts – and Nintendo’s – expectations. Company President Satoru Iwata said the company is expecting to ship roughly 2.8m units in the US and Japan by the end of the year.

Previous expectations were set at roughly 1m units. Nintendo launched the new system in the US first, on November 21, and then in Japan on December 2.

While Nintendo shipped 500,000 units to stores, many high-density areas were complaining about only receiving a handful, leading analysts and consumers to claim that Nintendo was artificially inflating the demand.

However the new announcement, coupled with news that Nintendo has sold more than 90% of the original shipment has industry analysts feeling much more positive about the launch.

"More than 90 percent of the shipped products are sold and we are continually feeding the market with additional hardware," he says of the U.S. market. There are some product shortages in the U.S. and the experience a week later with the Japanese launch was similar, he says.

In addition, Nintendo is expecting to increase production at its factories in order to meet demand, as well as to stock shelves with additional 10m units by next summer.

The company plans to launch the DS in Europe in the first quarter of 2005.

The Nintendo DS is shaped much like a Blackberry or a large flip-phone, though it actually has two screens. One is where the game happens, and the second is a touch-screen for more innovative features that Nintendo is only now beginning to truly show off. In addition the DS has a microphone and wireless adapter to enable online play with up to 16 friends.
