Canadian iTunes Music Store Delayed Author: Jeremy C. Wright, Staff Writer Thursday, 02 December 2004, 11:27 GMT Reader Comments | Add your opinion
Apple’s popular iTunes music service, for use with Apple’s insanely popular iPod music player, will not be today as planned. Company officials are stressing it will be available “very soon” though no timeframes – rough or otherwise – have been given.
"We said that we would launch the iTunes Music Store in Canada by the end of November, but we're going to miss this deadline by a bit," Apple said in the statement given to MacCentral. "You'll hear from us very soon."
Apple’s CEO Steve Job announced in early October that the music store would be available sometime in November – at an event that saw the launching of several other countries to the iTunes Europe music store.
Canada, though, has been sadly lacking the service for nearly 2 years – a fact which has caused adoption of competing services to soar amongst Canadian users.
The lack of a release is particularly troubling given that Canada is viewed as the most receptive to legal downloading – Canadians are apparently one of the most forward-thinking people in the world behind only a select number of European countries such as Switzerland.
Once the launch of the iTunes Canadian store is complete, expectations are that Apple will attempt to bring the Apple Store brand to Canada as well, likely with launches in the trendiest Canadian cities: Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Coincidentally the trendiest cities are also the largest.
Trying to make the best of the situation, Canadian Mac site ehMac started a pool as to when the Canadian store would finally go live.
