IBM Builds World’s Fastest Computer Author: Jeremy C. Wright, Staff Writer Friday, 05 November 2004, 09:37 GMT A partially assembled prototype of a new IBM supercomputer set a record of 70.72 trillion transactions per second earlier this week. IBM’s Blue Gene/L supercomputer is currently being assembled for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a prototype of a larger system for Livermore later next year. The new supercomputer system is a test system designed to prototype a smaller and more energy efficient design model. Livermore plans to buy a unit four times the current supercomputer’s size as part of next year’s plans. The transaction record was measured using the Linpack benchmarking suite which puts the computer through a series of increasingly complex mathematical formulas. The new record comes barely a month after a smaller version of the Blue Gene/L design beat out NEC’s Earth Simulator. Earth Simulator was built for the Japanese government and has stood proudly as one of the fastest computer on earth for nearly two years. The last two years, though, has seen a flurry of innovations in supercomputing including expanded grid computing, the use of massive Linux and Apple clusters and the use of entirely new storage mechanisms. IBM’s move to reduce the size of supercomputers, as well as the overall cost, is seen as a requirement to the future of supercomputing where units still take up entire rooms, if not wings, of university and laboratory space. IBM has also improved the efficiency of its processors, memory, bus speeds and the overall effect is that the system is nearly 30% more efficient with the same basic hardware. In addition, new software and compilers allow the system to take advantage of more processors than any other computer, a total of 16,384 nodes, or 32,768 processors. The announcement comes on the cusp of the industry’s most important annual conference, SC04, where scientists will analyze the latest innovations, any technical achievements as well as advances in usability and manageability of these massive machines. IBM has obviously secured itself a spot as one of the topics of interest with this latest flurry of developments. Other topics will likely include Cray Supercomputers’ latest models, and the advancement of solid state storage for use in high intensity environments. |
