Windows-Based Treo On the Way? Author: Jeremy C. Wright, Staff Writer Tuesday, 02 November 2004, 18:21 GMT Reader Comments | Add your opinion
The rumour mill is in full swing today with the scoop that PalmONE may be making a Windows-based version of the popular Treo handheld. While this is still in the rumour stages, the rumblings out of PalmONE are encouraging.
Earlier today, Engadget broke the story that PalmONE might be looking at possibly making a Windows-based Treo. Not dumping the PalmSource Treo's that run PalmOS, merely adding to the line. Since then the news has spread like wildfire with MS Mobiles finding a statement by PalmONE which "tacitly admits" to the development.
The idea is that the new Treo would likely run Microsoft Pocket PC Phone Edition, due to the touchscreen, though details are extremely slim right now. Obviously the Treo formfactor would be kept, though potential carrier, apps and specs are missing from the puzzle.
This story comes on the heels of last week's announcement that Palm was working with Microsoft to improve Exchange integration, which can only be a good thing. One of Palm's biggest challenges has been the extremely poor integration with Exchange Server, arguably the world's most prevalent corporate email platform. The various hooks, hiding and shindiggery that have been necessary to make Palm's various offerings properly synchronize with Exchange have left many a Treo in the dust.
If we saw a PalmONE offering that included a Windows OS and a slimmed down Outlook client, I know that many corporations would almost immediately label the new Treo their "corporate standard".
Ultimately, anything which makes life easier for mobile users is a good thing, and integration with Exchange and Microsoft networks on any level will make their lives easier. The rest, as they say, remains to be seen.
