Why HP is taking a big-time RFID plunge

Having already implemented radio frequency identification (RFID) at 28 of its manufacturing facilities worldwide, Palo Alto-Calif.-based Hewlett-Packard Co. is among a number of firms getting knee-deep in a technology that uses radio waves to identify objects or persons.
That the technology solutions provider is also tagging some of its product lines -- two Photosmart printers and one Scanjet scanner -- as part of a seven-store pilot project at Wal-Mart locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area shows HP's commitment to RFID, according to company spokesperson Dayna Fried.
