Microsoft's vision of security

Microsoft has come in for much criticism over the years for paying only lip service to security - but that has changed. Over the past year or so, it has started evangelising its messages in this area. However, Microsoft is quick to point out that it does not consider that it competes in the security technology space - its take on security is that it is all about effective systems and network management to reduce risk, rather than bolting products on to fix breaches. Therefore, security - or, rather, risk management - needs to be embedded throughout an organisation.
Because Microsoft has such a broad technology stack, including servers, operating systems and applications, its message needs to cover many aspects and is therefore somewhat complicated. However, Microsoft is able to divide its work in security into five broad areas.
