Over the last decade the Internet has matured from being a bit of a novelty item to becoming truly entrenched in the society of the modern developed world. The number of people with Internet access has grown at a tremendous rate, especially over the last 5 years with an estimated 729 million people now online around the world. Technology responsible for the delivery of the Internet into peoples homes has also developed very quickly, with standard dial-up modem access which was the staple internet connection medium of the 90's fast becoming the less preferred option.
The 21st century is the age of broadband Internet which is delivered via a range of mediums, from wired cable and DSL technologies, to wireless satellite and microwave solutions. As time goes on it is increasingly more likely that you'll be able to get broadband Internet access regardless of your location. Currently wired broadband solutions are by far the most cost effective solutions as you'd expect, and basic xDSL plans can now be had for less than what a decent dial-up connection would cost you just a year or two ago. The low cost, and high speed of these broadband connections have opened a whole new world of home servers where people host their own Internet related services such as email and websites. However, in the race to get more for less, are we properly taking into consideration the negative impact this new world of internet access can bring?
