AMD joins Linux development group

AMD is the latest company to join the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL), aiming to play an active role in its enterprise working groups. The move may reflect the increasing use of AMD's Opteron processor in Linux-based systems, such as Hewlett Packard's ProLiant DL145 announced this week. The OSDL controls the release of the Linux kernel under the auspices of Linus Torvalds. AMD's arch-rival Intel was a founding member of the organisation in August 2000. In a statement Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD's microprocessor business unit, said: "AMD and OSDL share a common goal of accelerating the development of scalable, reliable, affordable Linux-based solutions for the enterprise.
"Through participation in OSDL's industry working groups, AMD will be able to contribute its considerable microprocessor platform expertise to the advancement of Linux as a strategic OS."
