Moving Linux into the home

Hundreds of fans of the Linux computer operating system converged in Del Mar on Thursday to hear how their software is moving from a cult of computer geeks and big businesses to homes, schools and government agencies. The message from speakers and exhibitors at the Desktop Linux Summit: Linux is technically ready to compete with Microsoft Windows, but the word needs to get out more to software developers and computer sellers before it's adopted in numbers approaching that of Windows.
The conference, which ends today, is sponsored by San Diego-based Lindows Inc., maker of a version of Linux called Linspire. The company, which has a goal of making Linux software commonly used in average home computers, filed earlier this week for an initial public offering.
