The Wireless Era

It is no secret that the wireless industry is white hot at the moment. Wireless carriers are predicting a pick-up in growth because of new services, handset manufacturers are saying they will beat the record-smashing phone shipments of last year, momentum is surging behind wireless networking technologies, RFID is being billed as the "Internet of all things" and has giants like Microsoft and Oracle jumping into the business, and cell phones have become a necessity for everyone ranging from 8th grade punks to business executives. The way we live, work, and play will be reshaped yet again as we enter the wireless era.
Technological revolutions that forever change the way the world functions, occur, not because of one new technology, but by the coming together of several technologies all moving in the same direction. A clear example of this is the internet. The internet era was enabled by the coming together of different technologies and situations which include: creation of the World Wide Web; Mosaic; ISPs gaining more subscribers and lowering internet connectivity fees; speedier data transfer; National Science Foundation lifting restrictions on commercial use of the internet; and PCs having reached critical mass (I know there were numerous other components as well, but you get the point).
