Managing the wireless enterprise

Most enterprises have become awash with 'useful' technologies brought in by the backdoor. First it was laptops, then PDAs, and most recently wireless LANs. Whilst the impact may seem small to the individual employee, the potential effect on the business could be devastating. Who knows what information is lost when an unmanaged PDA is lost or stolen? Who knows how many rogue wireless access points have been added to the network?
Usually, IT managers are the last to know. All the above technologies add many benefits to individual productivity and corporate flexibility, but unchecked and unmanaged the benefits are undermined. Security is the most obvious problem, but there are also the hidden costs of management, the missed opportunities for corporate purchasing power, and the lack of control or protection of corporate assets. At a time when financial management is important not only for bottom line, but also good corporate governance, this is too big an issue to go unchecked.
