Cybercrime 'A Major Threat to Business'


Police chiefs will today warn of the escalating danger of hi-tech crime to British business. The UK’s National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU), which tackles cyber crime from a secret base, will reveal the massive impact of the Internet as a tool for crooks. They are believed to loot hundreds of millions of pounds from firms, big and small, each year by exploiting computer technology.

An NOP survey for the NHTCU will reveal the true cost of fraud, virus attacks, theft of data, spoof websites and sabotage.

At a major crime congress in London, Detective Chief Superintendent Len Hynds, head of the NHTCU, urged the Government, business community and law enforcement officers to work together to close holes in Internet security systems that are exploited by swindlers and computer hackers.
