SMEs wake up to virus threat

The channel should cash in on the growing awareness of security issues among SMEs. While the industry has traditionally focused on high-volume enterprise business, the sector is drying up and smaller businesses are becoming more aware of security threats. According to a survey by Trend Micro, SMEs understand the nature of current threats to their business and recognise the need to protect their corporate data. The report found that most small organisations had adopted a layered approach to antivirus protection and were open to ideas to protect their business further.
Lee Harrison, business development director at e92plus, said perceptions and background knowledge about the Internet and the threats it created were much greater among SMEs than they had been in the past. "If you go back a couple of years, the industry ignored the small players and went for the big money with the enterprises, but now — especially in the last six to nine months, people have realised the bubble has burst and they need to find other avenues," he said.
