City-Net: The future of wireless

Imagine a city with a built-in, invisible network that activates the minute there's an emergency. Fire and rescue personnel en route to a burning building could receive information such as blueprints, the presence of hazardous chemicals, occupation levels, fire location and intensity -- even response assignments. Incident commanders could track the movement of personnel inside the building, communicate with them, monitor their physical condition and check on their equipment status.
Imagine that same system could automatically reset traffic lights to move vehicles away from the scene.
This city of the future is on the horizon. It will be made possible by a wireless communications technology called meshing, in which specially enabled devices automatically form a wireless communications link between every other "mesh-enabled" device within a given range.
