Going Wireless At Home and Office

While some entrepreneurs dream of bringing wireless Internet access to odd places such as ships at sea or RV parks, some think bringing the Internet to people's homes or businesses over the airwaves may be the best market. Many people will continue to get their Internet over a cable modem or a digital subscriber telephone line. But there is a market for WiFi, as it is called, because some homes are not within reach of either of those more conventional services or because the quality of the connection is poor.
At the end of last year, 1.2 million users accessed the Internet from home using a wireless connection, double the 613,000 the year before, according to research firm In-Stat/MDR. There were 338,000 businesses that relied on wireless Internet connections last year, up from 205,000. About 1,000 small businesses sell wireless access, says Daryl Schoolar, a senior analyst at In-Stat.
